Becker Whips Rod Fenton

Irregularities Are Held At Minimum As Leonard Referees

Due to the expert refereeing job done by Benny Leonard, and no doubt because of the potential sting which still lay dormant in his two aging fists, the American Legion fight program passed rather peaceably last night at Fort Brandon.

The retired former lightweight champ of the boxing ring was continually at odds with the rampant Roderick Fenton, however.  A less strong willed character would likely have had considerably more trouble with the cantankerous Canadian.

Fenton was back to his old bad habits, specializing last night in hair pulling and choking which nearly got the best of George Becker.

Handsome George stuck with Fenton, though.  The New York pretty boy edged out the second fall and was awarded the third because of continued fouling on the part of Fenton.

The third drop went to hero Becker in six minutes.  His opponents’ shenanigans finally outran the patience of the game little arbiter and Leonard straightway turned the fall and thus the match over to Becker.

Becker, himself a former champ, poured fists and elbows into the face and chest of Fenton in the second as the crowd wildly clamored for the kill.  He did the trick with a crab hold, which completed the stanza in five minutes.

Fenton copped the 19-minute first toss with an arm-breaking hammerlock which forced his opponent to shout “uncle.”

Larry Kasaboski outwitted the clever Leo Jensen to sweep the preliminary match.  Jensen took only one fall, the first.  He came out of his corner at the gong like a flash, dropping his foe with three kangaroo kicks.  He doubled up Kasaboski’s legs and finished off the chapter in about 10 seconds.

An airplane spin gave Kasaboski the second in 19 minutes.  In the third he flipped Jensen off the ropes to the floor and again telescoped his legs to pin Leo’s shoulders.  The count was nine minutes.
