Rocca Combine Beats Rebels

Long Island Star-Journal – October 31, 1960

Antonino Rocca and Miguel Perez won two of three falls to defeat The Rebel Brothers in the feature of Saturday night’s pro wrestling card at Sunnyside Garden.

The Bavarian Boys and the team of Jerry Graham – Pampero Firpo grappled to a draw, while Ricki Starr defeated Red Grupe when the latter was disqualified.  Rocca faces Grupe in tomorrow’s feature.

Bruno Sammartino scored over Pat Kelly, Pao Yon Chon beat Miguel Torres, Luther Lindsey whipped Al Smith and Tony Martino won from Jose Romero.

Antonino Rocca won from Haystacks Calhoun  in 11:15 of the feature of last night’s professional wrestling show at Sunnyside Garden.

Bearcat Wright disposed of Chet Wallick in 9:15, Bruno Sammartino subdued Larry Simon in 6:45, Don Curtis whipped Jack Vansky in 7:45, Arnold Skaaland won two of three falls from Iron Mike DiBiase.

Promoter Walter Johnston has arranged another outstanding wrestling card for Madison Square Garden Saturday, Aug. 6, featuring unbeaten Antonino Rocca and Ricki Starr against Mike and “Doc” Gallagher, Irish roughnecks in a tag-team battle to a finish.

Bruno Sammartino, Abruzzi strongboy is teamed with Ilio Di Paolo, Up-State Italian, against Pampero Firpo and Dr. Jerry Graham in the semi-final event while an added attraction brings together the Canadian Greek brothers Chris and John Tolos, against the Bavarian Boys.

Name Wrestlers For Arena Show Tomorrow Night

The greatest line-up of pro wrestling talent ever assembled in one ring on Long Island will be at the Long Island Arena in Commack on Wednesday night.

Promoters Larry Mendelson and Manny Heicklen have arranged a sensational seven-bout program for their first card at the spacious arena located at Veterans Highway and Jericho Turnpike.

The great Antonino Rocca, unbeaten South American, clashes with Red Grupe, former heavyweight boxing champion of Europe, in the main event.

Bearcat Wright, 6-7 Negro sensation from Jamaica, West Indies, will clash with Chet Wallick and Bruno Sammartino, Italian strongman, will engage Larry Simon.

PITTSBURGH (UPI) – You look a Bruno Sammartino, and the immediate reaction is pity. No man his size should be in such a tiny jail.

His prison is a steel orthopedic appliance called a Milwaukee Brace. It became a part of Sammartino since he broke his neck and was nearly killed wrestling three weeks ago.

In medical language, his sixth cervical vertebra was fractured.
