Wrestling

The Evening Times & Star – October 12, 1911

Montreal, Oct. 11 — The followers of the wrestling game who went to Sohmer Park tonight, were disappointed. The bout between Raymond Cazeau and John Perelli, was comparatively tame. Cazeaux took two straight falls, both with body holds. The first went nineteen minutes, but on going to the mat the second time, Perelli tired quickly and fell an easy victim.

Some excitement is looked for next Wednesday when John Pohl Abs and Cazeau who on their last appearance converted a Graeco-Roman bout into a free fight will meet again, this time at catch-as-catch-can with every hold, including the strangle hold, allowed. On the 25th Cazeaux will meet Petersen, who claims the Graeco-Roman championship of the world.

Cazeaux Took Straight Falls

The Gazette – October 12, 1911

Perelli Was Too Light for the Frenchman – Falls In 19 and 22 Minutes.

ANOTHER MATCH WITH ABS.

Cazeaux to Meet the German in a Finish Fight at Catch-as-Catch Can.

John Perelli, the Italian wrestler who was matched against Raymond Cazeaux, the French champion, last light at Sohmer Park, lost two straight falls in little over half an hour. Cazeaux was too strong and heavy for the Italian, who, however, made up for his deficiencies in these respects by superior headwork and nimbleness on his feet. Time and again Cazeaux looked like taking a fall, but the Italian proved too slipery and on an almost equal number of occasions Perelli had holds which, had he been a little heavier and stronger, would have pinned the Frenchman to the mat. Perelli was conceding thirty-two pounds.

Cazeaux Took A Fall From Abs

The Gazette – October 5, 1911

The Referee Refused to Act After Twenty-Five Minutes of Rough House.

CAZEAUX THREW A CHAIR.

Abs First Tried to Hit the Frenchman With It – Fell Amongst the Crowd

A chair went hurtling over the ropes into the crowd during the Abs-Cazeaux wrestling match at Sohmer Park last night. Abs had been infuriated by his opponent’s tactics, and, breaking clear from the Frenchman, rushed to his corner and seized his chair. Cazeaux stopped the blow, seized the weapon, and threw it with all his force at Abs, who ducked and the missile dropped behind the ropes amidst the orchestra and the crowd. The extraordinary match ended disappointingly, Cazeaux gaining a fall and the match after forty minutes’ wrestling.

Abs was the first to be in the ring, jumping over the ropes on to the match, Cazeaux followed a minute later, wrapped in a flannel bathrobe, his appearance being the signal for a mixture of cheers, hoots, and jeers, though the majority of the spectators favored the Frenchman.

New Wrestler Coming

The Gazette – October 12, 1908

SWISS CLAIMED TO BE CATCH-AS-CATCH-CAN WONDER.

A Swiss who, it is claimed, is the most dangerous rival that Gotch will have in America this year, is to appear at Sohmer Park next Friday night. The backers of the Swiss do not wish to disclose his identity until he has been tried out in public, but they are confident that they have landed a first-class heavy weight, who can beat the best in the catch-as-catch-can game. Perrelli has been chosen to meet the Swiss in his try-out, and the Italian will bring out any wrestling that he possesses. The Unknown weighs 215 pounds and is 6 feet 2 inches in height.

A cable was received from Buenos Ayres yesterday stating that one of the big wrestlers in the tourney in which Cazeaux has been competing has sailed for Montreal. This man is Raoul de Rouen, well known in Parisian tournaments. He weighs 230 pounds and stands 6 feet 1 1/2 inches. Cazeaux is expected here later on in the season, but probably not for two months. He has gone inland from Buenos Ayres to take part in another tournament before he leaves South America.

Mohl To Meet Perelli

Syracuse Herald – May 12, 1908

“THE GERMAN SAMSON” SUBSTITUTED FOR SICK FRENCHMAN

Deemed a Better Match Than That Originally Scheduled — Referee Huck Makes a Candid Statement to the Public — Match to Be Catch-as-Catch-Can.

The wrestling match at the Alhambra Thursday night will be between “Big” Perrelli and Fritz Mohl, “The German Samson.” Arrangements were made

yesterday to substitute Mohl for Cazeaux, who is at present seriously ill at a hospital in Montreal. The style of the match will be catch-as-catch-can. If the men go into the match with that same amount of grit and determination which they are accustomed to show, it will be one of the best bouts seen hereabouts in some time.

Few Anglers Attended; Wrestling Benefit Was Not A Financial Success

Syracuse Herald – May 8, 1908

Mohl No Match for Cazeaux, Who Took Two Straight Falls — Pirate Succumbed to the Angler – Wendal Wins His Match From Solvay Man.

Financially the benefit entertainment of the Anglers association at the Alhambra last night was not a success; otherwise it was.

The anglers did not patronize the affair as liberally as was anticipated, consequently that big pile of money that was expected to polish up the interior of the contemplated club house is but a dream to-day. It may have been that the price, was too high for the average angler — $1 a ticket.

Wrestling at Syracuse

Watertown Daily Times – May 8, 1908

Syracuse, May 8. – The Anglers association of Onondaga put on the best wrestling bill of the season at the Albambra last night. While the attendance was fair it was not what was expected.

In the main event Raymond Cazeaux, the heavy weight champion of France, prevailed over Fritz Mohl, the “German Samson,” taking two straight falls at Graeco Roman style. The sturdy man from France made good the first time in 10 1/2 minutes, but the rugged German successfully withstood him for a half hour before he was downed the second time. It was a scientific exhibition that was cheered to the echo.

Referee Charles E. Huck announced during the evening that an arrangement had just been concluded whereby Cazeaux would meet the Italian, John Perrelli, in a return match at the Albambra next week. Their recent sensational match here, in which Cazeaux disabled his arm and lost by forfeit, refusing to go on for the second fall, will be remembered.
