Tag Team Bout At Bowl Tonight

San Pedro News-Pilot – February 26, 1946

Rebel Russell, who claims the coast heavyweight wrestling title, tonight will team with Bomber Kulkovich against Jim (Mighty) Casey and Tex Jones in a tag team match at Wilmington Bowl.

The bout may develop into a battle between Russell and Casey as Casey wants to “show up” the Rebel, who last week pinned him in Los Angeles.

Preliminary bouts match Jack Vansky against Tug Carlson, and Frank Gonzales against Kolo Stasiak.

Tony Martinez Risks Title

San Pedro News-Pilot – February 5, 1946

Tony Martinez, state heavyweight wrestling champion, tonight will risk his title at Wilmington Bowl against the challenge of Rebel Russell, late of Georgia.

Martinez won his title by defeating Russell in the final of a recent Los Angeles tournament.

Jim (Mighty) Casey will take on Hank Matheny in the semi-windup. Preliminaries pit Tex Jones against Bomber Kulkovich, and Tug Carlson against Butch Madray.

Rebel-Bomber Win Mat Match

San Pedro News-Pilot – February 27, 1946

Rebel Russell, claimant to the Pacific coast heavyweight wrestling title, last night teamed with Henry (Bomber) Kulkovich, rugged Russian, to defeat Jim (Mighty) Casey, former coast champion and Marvin (Tex) Jones, at Wilmington Bowl.

One of the largest crowds in recent months saw Russell and Kulkovich score their tag team match triumph.

Frank Gonzales, Mexico City, won a referee’s decision over Kolo Stasiak in a 30-minute match. Jack Vansky defeated Myron Cox in the opener. Cox subbed for Tug Carlson, who was reported injured and unable to appear.

Rebel Tests Newcomer

San Pedro News-Pilot – April 23, 1946

Rebel Russell, coast heavyweight wrestling champion, tonight tests George Becker, newcomer from the east, in the three-fall feature match at Wilmington bowl.

Becker, described as a scientific grappler, has been winning in New York and Philadelphia rings.

George Temple will meet Armand Tanny in the special event. Temple is scheduled to leave soon on an eastern tour.

Other bouts pit Vic Holbrook against Bomber Kulkovich and Bud Curtis against Brother Frank.

Martinez and Russell Matched

San Pedro News-Pilot – February 1, 1946

Tony Martinez, California heavyweight wrestling champion, Tuesday night risks his title at Wilmington Bowl against Rebel Russell, the Georgia rougher, whom Martinez defeated in the final of the recent Los Angeles tournament.

Promoter John Doyle also signed Jim (Mighty) Casey, two years ago one of the ace attractions at the port arena, to meet Hank Matheny in the semi – windups. Tex Jones will meet Henry Kulkovich and Butch Madray will take on Tug Carlson.

Mat Toughies Perform at Bowl Tonight

San Pedro News-Pilot – March 19, 1946

Giant Jules Strongbow, 345pound Cherokee Indian, tonight teams with Rebel Russell, mat meanie from Georgia, against Tug Carlson and Henry (Bomber) Kulkovich in a tag team match at Wilmington Bowl.

Although the rough and tumble tactics of Russell and Strongbow figure to be too much for the average opposing team, the fact that Carlson and Kulkovich are undefeated as a team and have worked out a system of coordinated effort may prove the downfall of the two roughers.

Mat Champs Retain Titles

San Pedro News-Pilot – February 20, 1946

Tony Martinez, state wrestling champion, and Jim (Mighty) Casey, coast titleholder, last night successfully defended their titles In bouts at Wilmington bowl.

Martinez won from Bomber Kulkovich and Casey defeated Jack Vansky, substituting for Tug Carlson. In the other feature Rebel Russell, rough Georgian, upset Pat Fraley.

Tex Jones and Frank Gonzales wrestled to a 30-minute draw in the first bout of the four-match bill.

Casey tonight defends his title against Reb Russell in a match at the Olympic in Los Angeles. Last week Casey defeated Russell when the latter suffered a cut eye.

Martinez, Szabo in Double Kayo

San Pedro News-Pilot – January 30, 1946

Tony Martinez and Sandor Szabo still are even-stephen in their wrestling bouts at Wilmington bowl. A double knockout last night climaxed their second bout In recent weeks at the harbor arena. Each had won a fall when they crashed heads last night, ending the bout in a draw.

Pat Fraley was awarded a decision over Rebel Russell when Russell got too rough for tough Pat. Marvin (Tex) Jones defeated Olaf Erickson and Hank Metheny and Henry Kulkovich tussled to a draw.

Martinez, Russell to Tangle Again

San Pedro News-Pilot – February 8, 1946

Tony Martinez, state heavyweight wrestling champion, and Rebel Russell will tangle again Tuesday night at Wilmington Bowl. The pair this week both were disqualified for roughness in a main event match at the harbor arena.

Tug Carlson will face Jim (Mighty) Casey in the semi-windup. Preliminaries pit Tex Jones against Bomber Kulkovich, and Jack Vanasky against Frank Gonzales.

Martinez, Russell Again Matched

San Pedro News-Pilot – February 11, 1946

A rematch between Tony Martinez, state heavyweight wrestling champ, and Rebel Russell will headline the wrestling show tomorrow night at Wilmington Bowl.

Last week the pair went to a draw in a scheduled 60-minute match when the referee stopped the match before the time limit had expired because of unnecessary roughness on the part of the principals. The time limit tomorrow night will be 90 minutes.
