The Boston Globe – August 18, 1960

Two of the outstanding Negro wrestlers in the heavyweight ranks, Bearcat Wright and Sweet Daddy Siki, have been signed as partners for an Australian tag team bout on the supporting card at the Boston Arena next Thursday night, Aug. 25.

They will be on the preliminary card to the world’s championship match between Walter (Killer) Kowalski and Haystack Calhoun, 601-pound hillbilly.

Haystack Disqualified, Killer Kowalski Wins

The Boston Globe – August 26, 1960

Killer Kowalski defeated Haystack Calhoun before 4500 last night at the Arena when the latter was disqualified. Calhoun won the first fall and Kowalski the second.

In the semifinal, Sweet Daddy Siki and Bearcat Wright won a tag team match from Boris Fabian and Angelo Savoldi. Prince Maiva pinned Tiger Jan Vansky and Jack Walker won from Jack Terry.

Kowalski Tackles Calhoun at Arena

The Boston Globe – August 25, 1960

World’s champion wrestler Killer Kowalski will defend his title tonight at the Boston Arena when he faces the bearded Haystack Calhoun in the feature event.

The semifinal will feature Bearcat Wright and Sweet Daddy Siki in a tag match against Karl Von Hess and Angelo Savoldi.

The opening bout (8:30 p.m.) will match Johnny Walker and Judo Jack Terry.

The special will feature Prince Maiva against Tiger Jack Vansky.

Glovers’ Bowl To Be Used For Last Time

Wrestling Show Set Monday Night At North Adams

NORTH ADAMS – Glovers’ Bowl, North Adams’ old wooden arena, will be used for athletics for the last time Monday night when promoter Joe Maruco will present a wrestling show. The stands and fences shortly will be razed to make room for a regional school.

The place was known for many years as Meadowbrook Arena. It was the boxing capital of the Berkshires. Archie Moore trained there in 1955 for his heavyweight championship bout with titlist Rocky Marciano.

Rocca Captures Mat Feature

Long Island Star-Journal – June 1, 1960

Antonino Rocca won from Haystacks Calhoun  in 11:15 of the feature of last night’s professional wrestling show at Sunnyside Garden.

Bearcat Wright disposed of Chet Wallick in 9:15, Bruno Sammartino subdued Larry Simon in 6:45, Don Curtis whipped Jack Vansky in 7:45, Arnold Skaaland won two of three falls from Iron Mike DiBiase.

Rocca, Calhoun Clash Tonight At Sunnyside

Antonino Rocca, best known wrestler of the past decade, and Haystacks Calhoun, 600-pound country-boy, battle in a single fall match highlighting tonight’s card at Sunnyside Garden.  The contest will open promoter Manny Heicklen’s program at 8:30 P. M.

Bearcat Wright, 6-7 Negro sensation from Jamaica, West Indies, will clash with Chet Wallick and Bruno Sammartino, Italian strongman, will engage Larry Simon.
