Garibaldi Beats Moquin In Three-Fall Mat Match

Courier-Post – October 9, 1945

Veteran Wins Two Falls to End Canadian’s Winning Streak Here

Larry Moquin’s winning streak in Camden has been ended, but the young French-Canadian grappler still retains his popularity with local mat addicts.

Moquin, who had won three straight matches here, met Gino Garibaldi, veteran New Yorker, in the feature match last night, at the Convention Hall, and lost to the brawling Italian.  It was a scheduled 90-minute time-limit match, two out of three falls to win, and Garibaldi won the first and third falls, with Moquin winning the second.

Garibaldi won the first fall in 22 minutes 37 seconds, with a rolling head scissors and body press.  Moquin won the second in 30 seconds, with a series of drop kicks and a body press, and Garibaldi won the third fall in 12 minutes 37 seconds, with a figure four head scissors, Moquin conceding the fall.

Garibaldi Uses Strangle Holds

Approximately 3500 saw Garibaldi rough-house and strangle his way to a win over the spectacular Moquin, and the majority of the fans thought Referee Jack Gross was too lenient with Garibaldi.  The official several times made Garibaldi break strangle holds, but on other occasions appeared to overlook the same sort of holds applied by the belligerent Italian.

Both falls scored by Garibaldi came about as the result of his applying figure four head scissors which he later turned into strangle holds.  The holds apparently weakened Moquin to such an extent that Garibaldi had little difficulty in later pinning him with legal figure four head scissors.

Moquin Scores Fast Fall

Moquin, despite the fact he lost, gave his more experienced rival a great battle.  Larry bowled him over so quickly to score the second fall that Garibaldi was stiffened almost before he knew it.  The young Canadian greeted him with a drop kick as the bell sounded and used six in a row to send Gino flat on the mat each time a kick landed.  After the sixth kick, Larry fell on Garibaldi and scored the fall with a body press.

And he thrice nearly pinned Garibaldi while they were striving to gain the third and deciding fall.  In the early stages, Garibaldi wriggled loose three times at the count of two and once the fans roared their disapproval, thinking that Referee Gross had given Garibaldi a long count.  However, it appeared as though Gino only had been down for two seconds instead of the required three.

Moquin after he had lost the third fall and had recuperated from the effects of the strangle and the legal head scissors, tore into Garibaldi and the cops had to climb into the ring and break up the added brawl.

Garibaldi weighed 221 and Moquin 216.

O’Toole and Martinelli Draw

Irish Tommy O’Toole, 238, Phoenix, Ariz.,, substituted for Yvon Robert, French-Canadian star, in the semi-windup and battled his way to a 30-minute draw with Tony Martinelli, 220, of Boston.

It was a slam-bang scrap with the offensive changing hands every few minutes.  O’Toole started some off-color tactics when the bout was only five minutes old and this was the style from there on out with both battlers forgetting all about legitimate grappling.

Each had several fine opportunities to come out on top, but neither could muster the necessary punishment to put his opponent away.

George Wilcheski, 228, Bridgeport, Conn., and Billy Kline, 205, Bronx, N. Y., scored a two out of three fall victory over Jim Austeri, 210, and Murray Rothenberg, 205, both of Paterson, in a lively team match.

Wilcheski-Kline Win First Fall

Wilcheski and Kline took the first fall in eight minutes 36 seconds when they flattened Rothenberg with a body press.  Murray was practically on his own the entire fall as Austeri continually ran out on his partner.

Austeri and Rothenberg evened things up, five minutes and 36 seconds later when they ganged up on Kline and pinned him with a body press.  The deciding fall went to Wilcheski and Kline in five minutes 32 seconds when the former caught Austeri in a body scissors and Kline held Jim’s shoulders to the mat for the count.

Chuck Ross, 264, Oklahoma, defeated Jack Smith, 218, Boston, in 20 minutes 18 seconds of a slow curtain-raiser, Smith succumbing to a body scissors and shoulder press.
