No Apology To Offer

Ironwood Daily Globe – March 20, 1930

Criticism has been offered in some quarters for the failure of The Daily Globe to display enthusiasm, in its publicity, over the wrestling match that was conducted on the Gogebic range Monday night. The Daily Globe feels that it owes no apology to the promoters. It might be well, however, for this newspaper to reiterate its position on most wrestling matches, not excluding the so-called championship affairs in which the great Gus Sonnenberg participates.

Almost every wrestling match billed for this neck of the woods in recent years has had the earmarks of being “framed.” In plain words, there has been every reason to believe that it was expressly agreed beforehand as to which of the two participants should win the match and what the outcome should be in their return engagement. It may be noted that the two performers who were here Monday night grappled to a draw in Ashland not long ago. After their match here Monday the vanquished performer sought to issue a challenge through The Daily Globe for still another match, the object being to arouse the sporting element to a high pitch that would have an outlet in the form of admission tickets. But The Daily Globe viewed this match in no other light than it has seen the majority of local wrestling affairs. Hence the lack of enthusiasm of the sports department.

The Daily Globe has endeavored to give conscientious support to legitimate sports events, particularly those that are amateur in nature. But there was nothing about the match Monday night that recommended it, either from the standpoint of past performances of the two wrestlers or from the angle of a sporting event. It was not, in our opinion, an event that could be placed in the category of those to which this newspaper desires to lend support.
