Giant Heavyweight Returned to Elmira After Strenuous Training—Announces Himself Fit to Meet the Swedish Champion Labor Day Afternoon.
The “Masked Marvel,” who will wrestle Charles Oleson at the Maple avenue park Monday afternoon for the American heavyweight championship, arrived in Elmira last night. He has been in training at Rochester, and with a few finishing touches announces that he will be in prime condition for the coming mat argument.
Workmen today are engaged in erecting a platform in front of the Maple avenue park grandstand. This will be enclosed by a hide sidewall, extended out on the track, giving every one an excellent chance to watch the bout from close quarters.
Phin Gould of Corning will referee the match, while Frank W. Ross and Dr. Vernon P. Ford will officiate as timekeepers. Mr. Ross officiated at the ringside at the time Henderson wrestled Frank Gotch in Elmira.
Mr. Henderson, better known in the ring game as the “Masked Marvel,” states that he has a great struggle on his hands, but he feels confident that he will be able to defend- his title against the Swedish champion. There will be a fast preliminary, after which the giant heavyweights will battle catch-as-catch can.
Doubtless there will be a large crowd not only from Elmira but the surrounding towns to see the great holiday sport on Labor Day.
