Reading Eagle – February 25, 1957
Ricki Starr, former ballet dancer and professional boxer and physically a ringer for Jimmy Londos, will be featured performer on Promoter Ray Fabiani’s semi-monthly wrestling card next Saturday night at the Armory.
The 200-pounder from St. Louis will trade holds with black-bearded Al Smith, winner of last Saturday night’s one-night tournament in the drillshed, in the best-of-three falls main event.
Starr was one of the “magnets” that lured a turnaway throng of more than 19,000 mat addicts to New York’s Madison Square Garden a few weeks ago.
The new “hero” of the wrestling fans disposed of three outstanding grapplers in as many Philadelphia appearances – Karl Von Hess, 340-pound Rocky Hi Lee and Skull Murphy. He also pinned Murphy on the above-mentioned Madison Square Garden card when he stole the show from such headliners as Antonio Rocca and Verne Gagne.
