The West Australian – October 29, 1928
MELBOURNE, Oct. 20. – Hughie Nicholls, 12.6 (Texas, U.S.A.), who appeared for the first time in Melbourne at the Stadium last night, fully extended the world’s light heavy-weight champion, Clarence Eklund, 12.8, in a match at catchweights, but lost the contest through being forced to surrender to a punishing bar toe hold at 4min, 27sec. in the seventh round. Among Nicholls’s achievements against the champion were the application of two toe holds on Eklund’s bare feet and the conversion of the reverse double arm scissors to his own advantage. No other wrestler has succeeded in either direction, and in addition Nicholls won frequent position on the mat against the best efforts of the acknowledged master in this phase of the sport.
